What do llamas, wax lips and bagpipe players have in common? No, this isn’t a trick question; they were all actual items expensed by business travelers in 2016.
Every year, Certify asks business travelers to share their craziest stories of the most outrageous expenses they’ve seen or submitted over the year. For most business travelers, their expense reports consisted of the occasional Starbucks drink, airport lunch or Uber ride, but for others, their reports were a little less ordinary. Take a look:
Whether these crazy expenses were justified or not, we saw over 430 outrageous responses from nearly every industry and job title. Additionally, nearly 1 in 10 respondents claimed that they knowingly purchased personal items and expensed them for business. And where over 47% of respondents are using some form of a paper-based, manual reporting process for expense management, it’s no wonder some of these crazy expenses slipped through the cracks. “If this survey is any indication of what some employees will try to get away with, companies should pay close attention when it comes to reviewing T&E expense reports,” says Robert Neveu, CEO of Certify.
Fortunately, Certify’s cloud-based T&E expense reporting software offers built-in protection from out-of-policy expenses. Ready to find out more? Current Certify users and administrators with questions can email support or speak to their account manager anytime. Not yet a Certify customer? Contact
